Many animals' habitats are under threat. In this endangered species program students meet a variety of animals, and partner with the Zoo in creating a small habitat back at school.
Students will examine the threats to different habitats, and explore ways to protect animals and their habitats.
To help create a habitat in their school (and maybe attract some animal inhabitants), students pledge to care for and protect an adopted plant.
Pre-visit Activities
1. Create a concept map to find out what the students already know about local animal habitats and what they would like to know.
2. Encourage students to construct a list of things they would like to know before they visit the zoo.
Post-visit Activities
During the program, the teacher will be given a copy of the Habitat Heroes poster, which explains exactly how students can work in teams to look after their plant.
The team is encouraged to report the plant's progress to the Zoo with regular updates, photos, stories and videos.
All reports can be sent to: habitatheroes@zoo.org.au
