On Site Activities

The following activities can be completed outside of your booked discovery session.
Please select from those below.

1. Endangered Species Learning Log
This activity can be completed by students in small groups on the day and followed up back at school. Students are presented with the focus statement:

‘As the threats to Australian animals increase, humans have taken up the challenge and met these with positive success.'

The focus statement is in 3 parts:

  • Have the threats to Australian animals increased?
  • Have humans taken up the challenge?
  • Have humans had success in meeting the challenge?

At each stage students should gather any evidence that may support or refute their claims.

Following your visit the student responses can be used for:

  • debating topics
  • exploring concepts
  • analysing costs and benefits of various alternative strategies for restoring habitat and protecting wildlife

The Learning Log can be used to identify and assess students' skills in the Thinking Processes Domain of VELS.

The Learning Log is best printed out on A3 paper, printed both sides and in landscape.

2. Endangered Species Research Table
This is a data collection activity which can be completed during the visit to Healesville Sanctuary and followed up with further research at school.

In this activity students work in small groups and visit a variety of animals all of which have been identified as having a particular threat affecting their survival in the wild. Students are encouraged to research widely and use other resources at school, at home and from their community as well as what's available at the Sanctuary.

3. School Designed Endangered Species Inquiry
Based on an inquiry model of learning, students follow through their own line of inquiry and seek answers to their own questions whilst at the Sanctuary.
Educators are able to assist students and may be able to direct them to research the answers.
It may be possible for students to speak with keepers, to attend special presentations, take photos or video footage or be involved in conservation action whilst at the Sanctuary. These options should be discussed with the Educator during the Pre-visit phone call.
