Youth Leadership program

Students explore the idea of leadership, draw parallels between the leadership styles, social structures and personalities of different zoo animals and human leaders, including themselves.

This learning experience is extremely engaging as it is authentic and relates to students as individuals in a meaningful way. It encourages them to reflect on their own style of leadership, to make choices about the application of their learning such as becoming a conservation leader within their school and local community.

Later Years students are considered a unique cohort requiring a different approach to teaching and learning to increase the chances of them staying engaged in schooling. Melbourne Zoo addresses the needs of these students through the delivery of this program.

This program can be customised to fit the needs of your students and your program. Some of the options available to explore in this program include:

  • Is leadership learnt or innate?
  • What is a leader?
  • What are the most important leadership qualities?
  • Is leadership learnt or innate?
  • Can animals learn to be leaders?
  • Evaluating our own leadership qualities.
  • Leading a behaviour change campaign.
  • Different leadership styles.
