The Don't Palm us Off petition has now closed - Over the first 12 months of the campaign over 130,000 people signed the petition telling us they they want the choice!

So how can you help now?

Zoos Victoria remains committed to this cause. There are two really great ways you can continue to help us save species such as the orang-utan!

1) Write to your local Member of Parliament - Tell them what your stance is on palm oil labelling. Ask them what they are doing to help get labelling mandatory.

2) Write to the manufacturers of your favourite foods - Ask them if they use palm oil and if so whether they source certified sustainable palm oil.(Dont be fooled! being a member of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil doesn't necessarily mean that they are sourcing certified sustainable palm oil)

Truth in Labelling Website Live - Nick Xenopphon's Truth in Labelling website is now up and running. In contains information on the palm oil bill and ways you can express you voice on fair labelling issues. Visit: http://www.truthinlabelling.com.au/

130,000 petition signatures collected! - This enormous public response will now be used as a catalyst to demonstrate the communities desire to change food labelling laws in an attempt to weaken our regions link to the palm oil crisis.

Palm Oil Legislation - The Senate Comittee has been granted an extention to consider Nick Xenophon's bill calling for the mandatory labelling of palm oil due to the overwhelming number of submissions. The final report from the commitee is now due on 31 August.

CEO's from Zoos Victoria, Taronga Zoo and Perth Zoo have been busy discussing the issue with relevant members of parliament and there is no doubt that the Don't Palm us Off campaign has generated a large amount of interest in the issue.

Woolworths key commitments:
Woolworths has had a policy of reducing the use of palm oil in its private label products and has achieved this for its Select brand where 95% of Woolworths Select brand food products do not contain palm oil.

In response to WWF and Zoos Victoria's campaigns Woolworths have recently worked with on broadening its commitments to include:

  • On pack labelling of palm oil in all its private label products.
  • Moving to RSPO (Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil) certified sustainable palm oil by 2015 for all Woolworths private label products.
  • becoming the first Australian retail member of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil - a global not for profit organisation set up to advance the use of certified palm oil and establish consistent standards

Did you know?

We share 97% of our DNA with Orang-utans. You could say they are our wild cousins.

Palm Oil typically costs the lives of up to 50 Orang-utans each week.

Over 85% of the worlds palm oil comes from Malaysia and Indonesia.

In SE Asia alone, the equivalent of 300 football fields are deforested every hour for palm oil production
