5% of our electricity supply is from accredited green power. Solar power is used to operate path lights in some areas. Solar boosted gas hot water systems are used extensively around the zoo. 

Biodiesel

A trial of biodiesel for Melbourne Zoo's diesel vehicle fleet is currently underway in 2008. This fuel is a blend of recycled and non-food grade vegetable oils, tallow and 80% mineral diesel. The vegetable oils used do not contain palm oil. Using this fuel has a substantial reduction in greenhouse gas emissions that ranges from 15% to 75% depending on the blend being used. It has the added advantage of using waste products.
